. for the past five days israel and hamas have fired rockets and bombed one another, israeli air strikes have taken a heavy toll on gaza and hamas. right now israel is keeping open the possibility of a ground offensive. they've got 30,000 troopons the border with another 75,000 reservists being called up. now, i want to show you something that played out live on israeli television just a short time ago. watch this. what you're called is called an iron dome. this is egypt's defensive zone system. they're tracking down two rockets. at the end, the small puffs there, that's the signals of success that those intercepters headed off those rockets. so far israel says a thousand rockets have been fired. hamas puts it at about 900. the constant threat has those in israel in fear. >> reporter: there's another attack, another rocket alert going on. we've got to get out of here. >> go, fred. there you see it. a strike in ash colon. we've got the pictures up as fred and our camera crew get out of the way. it's a sign that another strike is coming. can we listen here? >> reporter: and we have the impacts.

overhead is nearly constant. 11 people were killed today. the israel defense dome system, making it hard, knocking most rockets out of the sky well before they hit anyone. people are running for safety. the iron dome can only do so much, though. when the sirens sound, israelis scatter, looking for shelter, looking for a rocket trying to find its target. no sign is as ominous as this one, mobilizing along the border, egypt is trying to stop it from getting worse by spearheading talks. if the negotiators want to prevent a war they need to act quickly. ben, it looks as though everything is in place. are we about to witness a ground war here? >> reporter: well, it is difficult to say when a ground war would happen, but here on the border everything points to intense urgent -- prepares for preparations for the possibility of ground war. we've seen a lot of tanks coming by, a lot of armored personnel carriers. there are a lot of soldiers in this area. so clearly israel is going ahead with preparations. obviously, this depends on all sorts of diplomatic contacts at different levels. i heard a l

is running out. today was the deadliest day yet. israel saying it lobbed 135 rockets into gaza and some reports say up to 29 palestinians were killed today alone, including 10 members of the same family. on the other side of the border, air sirens screamed out in several cities. israel says it intercepted dozens of the nearly 150 rockets hamas fired including two targeted at tel aviv. the shelling is intense on both sides. cnn's anderson cooper witnessed it firsthand. he's been reporting live from gaza city. and earlier, i was on the air with anderson when a massive explosion took place nearby. watch what happened. >> in that blast, we know ten members of one family, also two media centers built -- [ blast ]. whoa! that was a rather large explosion. that occurred -- just look out here. i can't actually see where the impact of that was. it is actually set off a number of car alarms. but that was probably the largest explosion that we've heard just in the past -- really in the past hour. there have been a number of explosions in the past hour or two. but that one -- that one was pretty lo

200 rockets into israel. israel is massing troops near the border with gaza. they have got 30,000 troops there now and have 75,000 reservists getting ready. at least 42 people have died since the operation began. meanwhile, world leaders including representatives from the united states and the u.n. are calling on both sides to show restraint, but restraint seems to be in short order right now. our sarah sidner is live in gaza with a bird's eye view of the conflict. are you seeing more air strikes right now? >> reporter: absolutely, and in just the past few minutes we could hear the loud blasts of air strikes all night long into morning, 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning, blast after blast after blast and could look into the sky and see rockets coming from here in gaza city into israel. i want to show you a picture that our photographer dan morgan was able to take last night around 3:30 in the morning. he's pointing his camera towards what was the police headquarters. hamas police headquarters when he saw this picture. it was a big blast and then a big ball of fire. now, i want to sh

an israeli special envoy has just arrived for talks. israel targeted hamas government buildings, homes and a media center. six journalists were injured when that media was hilt twice. let's go to the israeli border at gaza. >> reporter: there's actually an air alarm in a town a couple of miles away from here. we have heard some thumping impacts there, just a couple of minutes before we went live on this report. tonight we ourselves have had to take cover twice when there were rockets being fired. it really has been quite a busy day, quite an intense day for the people here as well. they have been having to take cover quite a number of times. we have seen, i would say at least a dozen air alarms. also we were out in an open field and we had to take shelter there several times as well. it seems as though the rocket barrages are going on even more intensely than they were before. what the israelis of course do have is this missile interceptor system which has been active throughout the entire day. what this thing does, the way it works is that it only shoots down rockets that are actually

the scenes to try to keep the conflict between israel and hamas from escalating. rockets and missiles are flying back and forth between gaza and israel with multiple deaths on both sides now. and right now there's fear this could become an all-out ground war. our senior international correspondent sara sidner is in gaza city for us right now. sara, what is the very latest on this extremely tense situation? >> reporter: we have just heard moments ago, wolf, another air strike, a huge boom and then a black plume of smoke. you can actually see that with your eyes even though it is very dark here now. as we're getting information in just right now from that latest air strike, we are hearing that there are several people who have been killed. perhaps several children. we're still looking into that right now. this is just one in a series of air strikes today that have been a barrage of blasts all day long followed by huge plumes of black smoke. but we have also seen dozens upon dozens of rockets leaving this area and areas all along the gaza strip into israel. i want to let you hear that.
